If you need to speak with the classroom teacher, a member of our teaching staff or the school principal, please visit the main office to schedule a meeting and/or contact the staff member via ClassDojo.  This will allow us to maximize time on learning and while ensuring you have our undivided attention when meeting.

Dismissal Policy

We aim to maximize every minute of our school day. With this in mind, please kindly adhere to our dismissal procedures:
Early Dismissal ends at 3:30 pm.
  •  If you need to make a change to your child's dismissal routine (need to pick-up early; child is not riding the bus etc.) please contact the main office by 3:00 pm.  We understand that last minute changes occur and we will be flexible in those cases.
  • We set an early dismissal cut-off time to eliminate the number of interruptions occurring in the classroom AND to ensure students are not missing out on valuable learning.  Teachers are still engaging in instruction all the way to 4:00 pm. Again, we understand that last minute changes may occur, and with proper notification we will be flexible in those cases.

Indoor Dismissal
  • Dismissal will take place in the classrooms. Families will enter the Main Office Door and wait in the Library. At 4:05 pm, families will form a line outside his/her child's classroom door to sign him/her out for the day.

School Buses:
Buses are scheduled to leave our school by 4:20 pm.

Late Dismissal:
Students who are not picked up by 4:25 pm will be brought to the main office to wait for their parent/guardian.
Please plan accordingly to ensure that your child is picked up by 4:25 pm.

Uniform Policy

We have a school uniform at the Shaw.
Tops: Students will wear Hunter Green/Forest Green Shirts.  Uniform shirts are purchased from Boston School Uniforms.
  • Short and Long-Sleeve T-Shirts
  • Short-Sleeve Polo Shirts
  • Crew Sweatshirt (No hood)
Bottoms: Khaki Bottoms (Pants, Skirts, Shorts) OR P.A. Shaw Grey Sweatpants
Shoes: Closed Toe Shoes
The uniform policy will be enforced. Students who do not arrive in uniform will report to the main office and receive a shirt to borrow for the day and must be returned by the end of the day. Shirts and Sweatpants are ordered from
https://bostonschooluniforms.com/collections/pa-shaw-elementary-grades-k0-3. Khaki Bottoms and shoes must be purchased by the family.
  • If any family is in need of financial assistance, we have a partnership with Rosie's Place which will cover up to $25 of the uniform costs.

Food Policy

Staying fed and nourished throughout the day is an important part to keeping our minds and bodies awake during the school day!  With this in mind, we recommend the following:
  • We provided free school breakfast and lunch each day. The menu for both breakfast and lunch will be shared on a monthly basis. Please make sure to review the menu with your child -- especially if you know your child is a picky eater! Students can bring their own lunch to school if preferred!
  • Snack vs. Lunch: If you do bring your own lunch to school, please make sure it's clear which items are for lunch and which items are for snack. Might be helpful to place the snack items in a Ziploc bag to help distinguish the difference!
  • We are a peanut-free school. Please make sure that items students bring to school does not contain peanuts in it.  Find more Food & Nutrition information from BPS here.

Birthday Celebrations:
We love to celebrate birthdays at the Shaw! If you would like to celebrate your child's birthday in the classroom, please contact the classroom teacher with at least 1-week in advance. Again, please make sure that any food brought, does not contain peanuts.

Snack-Time:
Because of our long school day, snack-time will be built into each classroom's schedule.
  • We will be participating in a Fruit & Vegetables program where students get to try a variety of fruits & vegetables at least twice a week!
  • Your child's classroom teacher will communicate his/her policies on snack-time.
Recommended  Snacks:
  • Goldfish, Graham Crackers, Animal Crackers, Pretzels, 1 bag of chips (small bag, vending machine size)
